Rod of the Road

+Matthew Kerwin asks " I happened upon this off-white metallic stick protruding from the ground. It's about 2' long and roughly 1" in diameter, but a bit knobbly and uneven. Can you tell me what it is or does?"

Matthew, you seem to have stumbled upon a Rod of the Road.

While not terribly common, they aren't thought to be worth much.
Whenever you are unsure of which way to travel along an established walkway, path, or road you may hold up the rod and it will gently tug you in the direction it decides you need to go.

A Rod of the Road is never wrong, but that does not guarantee the way it wants you to go is safe. The user, of course, is under no such compulsion to actually follow the rod's advice.
